Deutsche Telekom Transitions Voice Telephony Platform to Cloud

Deutsche Telekom has completed the migration of its IP-based voice telephony platform to the cloud, marking a significant milestone in the telecom industry.
Deutsche Telekom networkThe transition of the IP-based voice telephony platform saw the movement of over 17 million customer connections to cloud data centers in Germany, signifying a major shift towards centralized control and enhanced efficiency.

Under the umbrella of the Next Generation IP Multimedia Subsystem (NIMS) platform, billions of voice minutes are now seamlessly managed, with approximately 100 interconnect partners facilitating the process.

The success of the project is attributed to a collaborative effort with key industry partners, including Juniper Networks, Mavenir, Microsoft, HPE, Red Hat, and Lenovo.

Abdu Mudesir, Chief Technology Officer of Deutsche Telekom Deutschland, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “Our goal in this innovation project has always been to set a benchmark for excellence in the industry, for our customers.”

Leaders from partner companies also expressed their pride in contributing to Deutsche Telekom’s vision. Rami Rahim, CEO of Juniper Networks, hailed the project as a blueprint for the telecom industry, while Yousef Khalidi, CVP, Azure for Operators at Microsoft, commended Deutsche Telekom for leveraging cloud-native network functions to deliver mission-critical performance.

Mavenir’s EVP & Chief Technology and Strategy Officer, Bejoy Pankajakshan, highlighted the transformative impact of the NIMS platform, emphasizing its role in driving automation and interoperability in the telecom cloud architecture.

Stefano Capperi, OSS and automation portfolio leader at HPE, emphasized the platform’s role in advancing “Zero Touch operations,” reducing manual intervention and enhancing software-based solutions.

Looking ahead, Deutsche Telekom has outlined plans to extend the cloudification, disaggregation, and automation model to other voice applications, 5G Core, and access networks.
